Jewish Studies

Hebrew College offers a wide array of degree and certificate programs to prepare you for a career as a Jewish professional or to help you advance in your career. You may also choose to study for your own personal enrichment. Our faculty is deeply committed to guiding you toward your chosen goal.

In the classroom, you will join with students of diverse ages, backgrounds and beliefs—some straight out of college, others with experience in Jewish communal and educational institutions, still others preparing for a second career in the Jewish professions. Our students find this diversity to be one of the most enriching elements of their Hebrew College education—the chance to learn from others’ varied world views and experiences as they jointly grapple with Jewish texts and concepts.

Within many of our graduate academic degree programs, this stimulating and challenging conversation is enhanced by the pairing of traditional classroom instruction with guided text study in our Bet Midrash (House of Study). There you will explore and debate with a hevruta study partner, supported by faculty-mentors, following the classical model of Jewish text study. For those text courses which are taught via distance learning methods, the College offers a “virtual” bet midrash, where students learn together with their peers in real-time (i.e. synchronous) hevruta sessions. These sessions are facilitated by instructors.

Hebrew—the language that binds the Jewish people—is a keystone of most degree programs and certificates. The College offers a range of Hebrew language instruction, from beginner through advanced, both on-campus and on-line. Hebrew requirements vary by program; you will take a Hebrew language placement test as needed to enable us to match you with the appropriate level of instruction.

Through your coursework at Hebrew College, you will gain a strong foundation in classical Jewish studies, the skills to engage the complexities of contemporary Jewish life, and, in all likelihood, the desire to learn more. Baruch habayim—Welcome!
